What is it?
While I was involved in the brake pad launch, I had to pitch ideas to our marketing manager. The other marketing student and I were working on the brake launch and had to develop marketing communications ideas on how to increase awareness of the new brake pads and how to drive sales. The purpose of this presentation was to get final approval from our marketing manager and finalise the scope of the product launch.
What have I done?
The other student and I had to develop a presentation suitable for a project pitch to the manager. For this presentation we had to include our ideas as well as a timeline and involved costs. That meant that we had to firstly come up with a broad draft on the marketing communication media that we wanted to use for this launch. To start off I outlined the target market and its characteristics to understand the specific needs better. I then had to request quotes from our agencies for various supporting materials such as graphic design, printing and POS give-aways. Once I had obtained these quotes we decided on which ideas would actually fit into our budget and best meet the target market. We then designed a timeline as to best suit the market and penetrate it over an effective period of time. After we had come up with our ideas and proposed costs and timings, we had to put all the information into a presentation that would outline the product launch and our ideas to the marketing manager.
We then had a meeting with the manager where we had to present our findings. In this meeting we had to professionally showcase the launch strategy.
What did I learn?
This product launch pitch has given me a lot of insight. Firstly I learned what needs to be included in a product pitch. That was a great challenge during the lead time to this presentation. I learned to always include a brief in the presentation that clearly outlines what is going to be done; who is the target audience; how is this project going to fit in with other projects; how does it add value to Bosch; and who is responsible for which actions and when. This is something I would do differently in the future. From now on I would always include a brief and be more confident when presenting findings. I also learned how to professionally hold a presentation and we received some valuable tips from our marketing manager. It was definitely a step outside my comfort zone to present in front of experienced managers.
How did it help me achieve my goal?
This helped me grow closer to my goal of achieving a professional approach. I was able to learn a bit more about how to professionally present in front of managers. I learned how to use a businesslike approach and appropriately present the findings. Using the theory I have learned at university to design the presentation has helped me to tie my studies to my work experience. The valuable feedback will help me for future presentations and I will be able to develop my professional manner further when presenting. This will be very important for working in marketing as a lot of marketing proposals and plans need to be presented to clients. As I was already able to gain some experience in presenting I will be able to approach a similar situation more confidently and prepared. This has helped me to become more work ready and develop skills that are needed in the marketing profession. Throughout the remaining time in my internship I will push to get even more experience in professional presenting in order to further explore how it should be done. I will also be attending a presentation workshop to learn new practices and tips for professional presentations.
Please note that due to confidentiality I am unable to include the presentation at this point in time.
